When the Kyiv Metro was opened one November 6, 1960, the industry was mass-producing series-D cars. In 1960-61, the metro had 24 cars and by 1963 - 39 cars. From 1964, the Mytischi Machine-building Plant stopped producing cars of this type. In 1969, all 39 cars of this type were given to the Leningrad Metro for use on lines with the "horizontal elevator"-type stations. In return, the Kyiv Metro received 39 type-E cars. Now, Kyiv has at least three type-D cars. One of them is being retrofitted as a museum, another is a track laboratory and the third has been made into a battery-powered locomotive.
